About Chiang Mai
About 700 km north of Bangkok you find the city of Chiang Mai, one of the most populous cities in the kingdom, excluding the capital. Chang Mai is also the name of the province covering over 20 000 km. In November to February, the climate is quite comfortable here (it can even be very cold at night) but for the rest of the year, it is often quite warm in the day here and sometimes it becomes too hot.
Several tribal people still live in the traditional manner in the area. The most famous is the "long-necked tribes, which through out the metal rings extended their necks to enhance their status in the village hierarchy.
The nature in Chiang Mai is different from other regions in Thailand. Most of the province is covered with jungle and mountains. Here you also find Thailand's highest point, Inthanon Mountain. It´s top extends 2575 meters above sea level and the temperature on the top is significantly lower than down in city. You can easily reach the top by car from the city. The relatively unspoiled nature outside the city is suitable for trekking and outdoor life. There are several tours to choose from, and lengths ranging from single day trips to trips up to one week. The trip is usually made by foot, but it is possible to go by elephant or jeep. Guides who speak both English and several tribal dialects are available to hire.
