About Nan

At Thailand's northern border with Laos, one finds the city and province of Nan. From Bangkok the approximately 670 kilometer-long route is operated by train, bus and plane.

Tribal peoples in the area come largely from the neighboring country of Laos and is said to have settled in the area around 700 years ago. Since people were here long before today's land borders, we could say that Nan's story also belongs to the history of Laos. The tribes in the area have a tradition and style that is very different from other parts of the country, not least in terms of craftsmanship. Some of the most typical products is the woven fabrics Lai Lai Nam and the guitar-like instrument Sung.

Attractions

Nan boat races with long tail boats compete in October-November each year on the Nan river. The competition is very popular and attracts a large audience.

Phra That Chae Haeng is a prehistoric temple a few kilometers from the city. One time, was the over 50-meter-high building, the old city center.
