Although the town of Songkhla is the capital of the province, Hat Yai is both larger and more well known. The cities belongs to southern Thailand's largest. Hat Yai is a relatively paced city with larger companies and extensive shopping opportunities. The port city of Songkhla is a quieter city with more cultural elements. The most common religions in the region is Islam and Buddhism and the population consists mainly out of Thais and Chinese. The various ethnic and religions have both contributed to its unique cuisine.

In the case of traditional crafts are cotton fabrics the most typical of the province. The fabrics that often are of high quality are made by hand and sold, on the island of Koh Yo. The island is linked to the mainland by a bridge and the bus from Songkhla takes about half an hour.
