The city is working as the gateway for travel from Bangkok to the southern parts of Thailand. This, because of the approximately 650-km-long railway linking the south to Bangkok. You can also fly here from the capital, or go by bus. The people of Surat Thani has a long tradition of fishing, extracting rubber from rubber plantations and coconut exports. Now is also the tourism industry a major source of income, not least in the province's islands.
