50% of the Corals have Died

According to the Thai marine biologist Pinsak Suraswadi, OVER 50% of the corals in Thailand have died. The cause is considered to be the fishing industry, the widespread tourism (and its impact on the environment), and the global temperature increase. According to Pinsak this is considered to be an emergency. However, you can see an improvement, as national parks that have been closed a certain time of the year, are recovering to some extent.

Our thoughts: It's scary that greed often wins over sustainability and care for the future generations. Newsstop

Swede Killed "Kiwi" in Pattaya

A 40-year-old Swedish citizen is suspected of murdering a 43-year-old man from New Zealand. The incident occurred early this morning in the famous / infamous resort of Pattaya. The Swede ended up in a argument with the victim in a bar, because what is said began as a dispute over a dog (!) The fight escalated later in the street and apparently the Swede went off to get a fruit knife. He stabbed the victim in the neck and in the back. The New Zealander collapsed, bleeding heavily. An ambulance arrived, but his life could not be saved.

The Swede was arrested shortly thereafter, which may have been lucky as a crowd of onlookers started to become irritated. He did not say much at the preliminary hearings, but his Thai wife claims that the Swede was attacked and acted in self-defense. Newsstop

Shocking Price Increase on Liquor

Effective immediately, The tax on imported spirits are raised by 400 baht per liter! Also taxes on tobacco and other alcoholic beverages are increased. Locally produced spirits are raised by 120 baht per liter!

Our thoughts: 400 baht and 120 baht per liter?! I guess the intention is improved public health and increased tax revenues. I will personally look into this the coming days to see if the price increase has become a reality. Newsstop

Thai People: Wrong Boxer Won

Kaeo Pongprayoon lost in the Olympic final last night. Zou Shiming from China won the gold, but most Thais think that this was deeply unfair and I can agree with that. In my view the Thai won, but the judges scored more clean hits for the Chinese. I guess you simply have to accept it.

One of the companies that promised ten million to Kaeo if he won, consider him as a moral winner and will give him the money anyway! Newsstop

Thailand Boxer in the Olympic Final

Tonight, Kaeo Pongprayoon from Kamphaeng Phet will box in the Olympic finals in the -49 kg class. In the final he will face the triple world champion and Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming of China. It will not be easy.

Millions of Thais are expected to watch the fight on TV in the middle of the night (in Thailand). If he would win the gold, there have been rumors circulating that various private companies (including television stations) will offer him about 50 million baht! In addition, he will maybe even be rewarded a higher military rank if he wins the gold medal.

New Law: Illegal to Drink in Vehicles

As of today (August 8), it is forbidden to drink alcoholic beverages in all types of passenger vehicles in Thailand, including buses.

Our thoughts: Spontaneously, I wonder if this will affect (read: anger) thirsty "visa-runners" traveling by bus to the borders of Malaysia, Cambodia, Burma and Laos. Newsstop

Many four-and five-star hotels and resorts in Thailand have chosen to lower their prices significantly during this low season. Some 3000-5000 baht rooms, now costs. If one is to generalize, you might say that the price increase trend (which has lasted for more than a decade) now seems turned into a "price war", with really favorable prices for the guests as a result.

A Few Words about me

My name is Jens and I was born in the early seventies in Södertälje, Sweden. I traveled for the first time to Thailand in 1989-1990 and already then started to have strong (positive) feelings for the country and it's people. During subsequent trips, it was mainly beach-life and Muay Thai training on the agenda but as time has gone by a strong interest regarding Thailand's history, community and culture has emerged within me. In early 2004, I moved here permanently.

My wife Rawadee is indirectly involved in the writing and contributes with knowledge, facts and inspiration. We try to alternate daily news from the country with our own reflections. The news and blog are illustrated with some photos, both my own and others. I hope you'll find the reading somewhat useful and I am of course open to your comments, suggestions and criticisms.

We are full-time geeks. Jens is working with web development, search engine optimization, graphic design and photography. Rawadee had a computer shop before, but is now also working with web development.
