About Ubon Ratchathani

In Thailand's eastern parts you find the province of Ubon Ratchathani. In the province's southern parts the mountains Banthat splits Thailand from Cambodia, while the eastern border with Laos in part consists of the well-known Maekong river.

During Rama the firsts time were the area around the current Ubon Ratchathani both war-torn and unsettled. Because the people who lived in the area was not organized under a so-called leader was a reward launched to the person who could get the people together to a "thai-friendly" force. Tribal leader Thao Kham Pong took the successful challenge and was awarded the title Chao Muang (Head of the area). Having helped the ruling Thai forces, the new leader advanced and became the governor over the city that was named Ubon Ratchathani.

Today, the area's typical food products is sticky rice and freshwater fish. The most well known is
Pla Sawai or Pla Thepo (Pla means fish in Thai) and the fish is prepared in a variety of forms. The distance to Bangkok is more than 600 kilometer and bus, train and air travel on a daily route.
